The Conestoga Wagon was first built in Lancaster and used extensively for migrations before the development of the railroad. The first Pennsylvania Rifle was produced by Martin Meylin in the 1700s. Peeps candy, shaped as marshmallow chicks covered with yellow sugar, were invented by the Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster in the 1920s.

In 1953, Rodda was purchased by Sam Born, the Russian immigrant who invented ice cream “jimmies.”

After the American Revolution, the city of Lancaster became an iron-foundry center. The innovative gunsmith William Henry lived in Lancaster and was a U.S. congressman and leader during and after the American Revolution.

Continued growth required more services for manufacturers

That’s where MP&P came on the scene. When Lancaster, Pennsylvania manufacturers require service and repairs to their industrial rolls, they depend on MP&P. These companies understand that manufacturing success thrives on productivity. When industrial rolls in Lancaster, PA require servicing, they send their industrial rolls to MP&P for proven solutions. Manufacturers have commitments to customers making their industrial rolls critical to stay online and produce.

For over six decades, MP&P has provided single-source roll fabricating, plating, grinding and full-service roll repair. Customers need to get their rolls back on the plant floor to produce.

It was 1993, the year of the “The Comeback.” Quarter Back, Frank Reich led the Buffalo Bills back from a deficit and overcame the Houston Oilers 41-38 in overtime in a wild card playoff game. It was the greatest comeback in NFL history. That same year, Dwight Steisel, now a Coasting Specialist, made his career change as he walked out on the floor at MP&P. He had no experience in industrial roll finishing, but he did have a plan, to pick things up as fast as he could, and learn more than one skill so he could be flexible in handling many of the various roll services.

His first position began in the plating department. “ I started working here and was trained in plating along with my own learning as things went along. There’s a lot of technical details to know,” Dwight said. He went on to become a supervisor in 5 months. He spent 5-years working second shift.

PLATING

Then he moved to first shift supervisor. Things were fast moving and over time Dwight set his mind on learning as much as he could throughout the shop with a mindset to be more versatile and valuable.

High Bay Lathe

He covered many positions in the company over the years: prep work, metalizing, grinding, high bay work, and nickel plating (the only person handling that). For a time, he oversaw the safety department. His positions took him to, ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, heat treating, and crane operator. All these positions require attention to detail and the ability to think on your feet.

Teflon Coating

“The working environment here is the key. We have a really great team effort going; we help each other and work hard to keep the roll servicing productive and profitable which also helps us to stay employed, and there’s been no layoffs.

Prepping the oven

Everyone is involved in getting the work done for our customers. There’s many days when Gary Nalband, the owner, is out here 12 hours a day working, and he’s not the only one— it seems to me that encourages others in the company.” There’s always some kind of problem to solve and that keeps everybody sharp. This is a good place to be working!

One of the more popular roll finishes is the Matte surface finish. This finish is often applied on heat transfer rolls resulting in a non-gloss appearance. An MP&P PreGrain Finish®, is also known as a Hard Matte Finish or Satin Finish. It’s roll that is a textured roll chrome plated. Whether dull or bright textured surface the surface is deposited with a thin layer of chrome. The silvery toned chromium plated surface feels slick to the touch while the surface retains the roughness of the blasted base metal, creating a textured surface with release. The finish formed from PreGrain creates air spaces between the roll and the product being finished and this significantly aids in the release from the roll surface.

Applications:

Some of the applications that currently use MP&P’s PreGrain® surface include but are not limited to plastics extruding/calandering, film casting, and embossing. MP&P’s PreGrain surfaces also provide additional release. This is mainly used in many plastic calandering and plastic extruding operations.

Industries served

MP&P’s PreGrain® surfaces are used in almost every industry such as,

-Plastics

-Film

-Composites and coated materials.

And many more.

When it comes to finishing industrial rolls for manufacturing production, accuracy in precision is the key factor. Both precise diameter sizes and concentrically make the difference in producing a high-quality finished product.

Very stringent specifications are required to produce the highest quality. Industrial rolls are at work in numerous industries such as:

Textiles

Steel

Paper

Film

Rubber

At MP&P when we produce roll grinding services the benefits include:

Shorter done time for your business.

Uniform surface finishes

Tight tolerances

Lowered maintenance cost

Increased productivity

True-up rollers

Renew concentricity

MP&P can grind rolls to surface finishes of 2 Ra and tolerances of 50 millionths TIR (Total Indicator Runout) and shape. That means that the MP&P refinished roll will operate as well (or better) than the original roll once it is back in operation at your facility. When your roll arrives, we perform an extensive inspection. Over decades of handling just about every type of roll grinding challenge, our team brings tremendous confidence in meeting the challenge. Our experience allows us to understand required roll grinding process demands set before us. What’s more, we maintain a library of sorts with records of what work we have done for you in the past. This helps us to be totally “familiar” with your rolls when they come to us. That is extremely important because each customer, even if they are in the same industry, is unique in terms of what their rolls need. The value to you of having this kind of historical detail allows us to make determinations on your behalf that would otherwise be impossible. Contact our team today to discuss the challenge you may be facing with your rolls.
