Roll Refinishing
Our Roll Refinishing Services
HIGH-TECH TOOLS IN EXPERIENCED HANDS
When a roll comes out of service with surface wear, coating degradation, finish inconsistency, or dimensional drift, the work required isn't always a structural repair or a new chrome plate from scratch. Roll refinishing restores the working surface of an industrial roll through precision grinding, re-coating, and surface finishing, returning it to its original geometry and finish specification without rebuilding the roll from the shell in.
At Mirror Polishing & Plating Company (MPP), roll refinishing has been part of the core service offering since 1954. It's not a secondary capability here; it's part of what this facility was built to do.

What Roll Refinishing Is (and Isn't)
Roll refinishing addresses the surface. If the roll's core, shell, and internal components are intact and the problem is confined to the working surface, refinishing is the right choice. Worn chrome, degraded coating, out-of-tolerance diameter or roundness from service, feedlines, hard spots, and chatter marks from previous grinding are all surface problems. Precision grinding and re-coating can correct them without pulling the roll apart.
What distinguishes roll resurfacing from repair is the starting point of the evaluation. Every roll coming into MPP is inspected to confirm its structural condition before the scope is determined. If the roll can be returned to specification by working from the outside in, that's where the work stays. If internal components are compromised, that moves the job into roll repair territory: a different service with a different process and a different cost.
MPP's Refinishing Capabilities
MPP's cylindrical OD grinders handle rolls from 3 inches to 96 inches in diameter and from 6 inches to 276 inches in length. Crown and concave grinding are both available. After grinding, MPP holds surface finishes to 2 Ra and tolerances of 50 millionths TIR (Total Indicator Runout) and shape. The finished roll is delivered with no variation in runout, no feedlines, no chatter, and no hard spots. MPP can also grind a roll in its bearings to eliminate variability due to installation.
For industrial hard chrome plating, MPP can accommodate rolls up to 144 inches in diameter and 240 inches in length, and up to 84 inches in diameter and 456 inches in length. Chrome is deposited under stringently maintained process conditions, then ground and finished to your specification. More than 150 surface finishes are available, from mirror finishes with surface roughness down to 0.5 Ra to textured, matte, and specialty coatings. If the roll requires a proprietary MPP finish (Opttex, MP-2, Mirror-ground, EZ Release, Mirror-Pocket, or others), those capabilities are available in-house.
Industrial roll refinishing at MPP is a single-source process. The roll does not move between vendors for stripping, grinding, plating, and finishing. It moves through MPP's 85,000-square-foot facility in sequence, keeping accountability clear from intake to delivery.
MPP also maintains roll history records. If a roll has been through the facility before, that history is on file. For facilities managing planned refinishing intervals across a roll fleet, this matters: cumulative stock removal, previous tolerances, and process notes are already documented when the roll comes back in.
Industries and Applications
MPP refinishes rolls for a wide range of industries and applications, including:
- Printing
- Paper
- Steel processing
- Plastics
- Film
- Converting
- Laminating
- Coating
- Calendaring
The requirement is consistent: the roll needs to return to production performing to specification, with documentation confirming it got there. MPP works from your specification. If you're working from a finish requirement in Ra microinches, a diameter tolerance, or a specific TIR spec, bring that to the estimate request.

Frequently Asked Questions: Roll Refinishing
How do I know whether my roll needs refinishing versus a full structural repair?
If the roll's shell and internal components are in good condition and the issue is confined to the working surface (worn chrome, finish drift, diameter that's gone out of tolerance from service, hard spots, or chatter), refinishing is typically the right solution. Structural roll repair involves the internal assembly: removing the shell, reconditioning internal components, and reshelling. MPP inspects every incoming roll before work begins, so you don't have to make that determination.
How much diameter is typically removed from a roll during refinishing?
The amount of stock removed depends on the depth and nature of the surface defect, the original diameter tolerance, and the amount of stock available for removal. MPP's goal is to remove only what is necessary to restore the roll to specification. Because MPP maintains roll history records for rolls that have been through the facility before, returning customers can track cumulative stock removal across successive refinishing intervals and factor that into long-term roll fleet planning.
Can a roll that still has its existing chrome be refined, or does the chrome need to be stripped first?
It depends on the condition of the existing chrome and what the refinishing specification requires. In some cases, the existing chrome can be ground to the new target geometry and surface finish without stripping. In others, stripping and re-plating is the right call to ensure uniform deposit thickness and coating integrity. MPP evaluates the roll's condition on intake and recommends the appropriate path before work begins.
What inspection documentation does MPP provide after refinishing?
Each roll is assigned a work order, and the roll is delivered to the specification agreed on at the estimate stage. If post-service inspection documentation confirming surface roughness, TIR, and final diameter is required, include that in the estimate request so documentation scope is established before the work begins. For rolls with prior service history at MPP, previous records are already on file and can be referenced.
Can MPP refinish a roll to a different surface finish specification than it originally had?
Yes. If a production change, material change, or substrate change means the original finish is no longer optimal, MPP can refinish the roll to a different specification. With over 150 finishes available, including ground finishes, specialty chrome surfaces, and proprietary MPP coatings, the new specification does not have to match the original. The process adjusts based on where the roll is starting from and what the new finish requires.
